The Germans always tend to have a good word which can be used to encapsulate meaningful changes or periods in history.

We are all familiar with the word “Zeitgeist”, which is used to define the spirit or mood a specific period in history as reflected by the ideas and beliefs of the time

However, given the dramatic events which have unfolded throughout 2022, we will all now surely begin using a (to this writer at least) new German word to help define this momentous year that has just passed, and that word is: “Zeitenwende” which is used to define a significant turning point in history and which broadly speaking refers to the end of one era and the beginning of another.

We will be covering our rationale for describing 2022 as a deeply significant turning point in history in our next commentary but suffice to say that the events which have taken place over the last 12 months are likely to force a dramatic change on how investors position, allocate and manage risk in the years ahead. To paraphrase Harold MacMillan, we will look back at the period covering 1995 to 2021 and realise that investors “never had it so good”. The next quarter century is unlikely to prove so accommodating to investors.

With that in mind let us briefly set out our outlook for the year ahead.
