British Prime Minister Harold Wilson famously observed that “a week is a long time in politics”. That certainly applies to the last week of February in which space of time the accepted post-war order in Europe was brutally turned on its head by the unprovoked and unjustified invasion of Ukraine by Russia. The longer-term specific implication of this act of aggression will obviously take time to play out, but it is clear that many of the beliefs we took for granted as regards accepted norms of behaviour between sovereign nations in Europe have been shaken to their core.
