Shard Capital To Target US Expat Market With New Investment Management Offering, Appoints Ernst Knacke As Head Of Research

September 1, 2020

Shard Capital, a leading provider of wealth management, custody and dealing services, has today launched its new business unit, LeifBridge Investment Services, aimed specifically at US citizens living in the UK and abroad. Ernst Knacke, who has spent the last 12 years at Quilter plc, has been appointed as Head of Research for the new business unit.

LeifBridge is focused on assisting clients in effectively investing and managing their wealth by integrating all aspects of global, multi-asset investing with the ability to navigate the complexities of cross-border tax.

Around 200,000 US citizens are estimated to live in the UK[1] but this barely scratches the surface of the relationship between the UK and the USA. The UK and US governments have made clear that they are determined to strengthen the economic relationship, which already generates $1.4trillion[2] in cross-border trade and creates millions of jobs on both sides of the Atlantic.

LeifBridge’s investment offering includes both a discretionary portfolio management service and an advisory service. It is led by a dedicated team of investment managers who will construct tailored investment strategies for each client designed to best achieve their objectives.

The appointment of Ernst Knacke into the newly created Head of Research role represents a key milestone in launching LeifBridge to the wider market. Ernst will focus on all areas of asset class research, including funds. As well as supporting LeifBridge, he will also help to progress the wider Shard Capital business.

Ernst brings to the role a wealth of industry experience, having spent 12 years of his career at Quilter plc. He worked in both the discretionary wealth management business, Quilter Cheviot, where he acted as a fund selector and investment analyst, and in the multi-asset team at Quilter Investors, where he was responsible for equity manager selection. Prior to this, Ernst worked for Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in mathematics as well as financial engineering from the University of Pretoria in South Africa

While LeifBridge will not offer tax advice, together the experienced team will work closely with clients and their advisors to ensure that clients are well supported in navigating the US tax system in an efficient manner whist ensuring that the investment strategies and the portfolios offered fit seamlessly within clients’ overall wealth management plans.

Commenting on the launch, Toby Raincock, CEO at Shard Capital commented: “The vast experience of our team, combined with a track record of delivering consistent risk adjusted returns, makes LeifBridge ideally placed to help our clients integrate all aspects of global investment with the nuances of cross-border tax.

“We are delighted that Ernst has joined as Head of Research, given his vast experience in both wealth management and multi-assets. Ernst will contribute to an industry-leading team of subject matter experts, with shared passions values and ideals, geared to deliver the highest quality of service to our clients. We believe that LeifBridge will form a key aspect of Shard’s wider market activity in the near future.”

LeifBridge’s Neil Williams comments: “The complexity of US taxation requirements can be a significant constraint to investment decisions for US citizens living overseas, particularly in the current economic climate which has created a myriad of risks for investors, as well as pockets of opportunity. By encouraging our clients to challenge conventional wisdom we not only help them identify hidden risks but also to identify new opportunities, helping them make better decisions today. As stewards of our client’s capital, our aim is to provide them with a more dynamic approach to investment management predicated on both protecting and enhancing their wealth.

“It is great to welcome Ernst to the team. We have tailored our investment vision to meet our clients’ needs and Ernst’s appointment is key to building our business to be the best in its field.”
